Earlier this year, the DESMI Service Team boarded two container vessels at a shipyard in China to inspect the engine-room pumps. DESMI’s message is simple: the right equipment is not enough. It also has to be chosen correctly and followed up, so the installation keeps running without interruption.
DESMI in brief
DESMI is a Danish pump manufacturer from Nørresundby. The range is broad:
- Centrifugal pumps for cooling, ballast, bilge, fire and circulation.
- ROTAN internal gear pumps for oil, fuel and sludge.
- Triple screw pumps in the K-series, also for methanol and other alternative fuels.
- CompactClean ballast water treatment and OptiSave, which adjusts pump speed to actual demand.
At sea and ashore
In the Faroe Islands and Greenland, sea and land are closely linked. Fishing vessels, ferries and service vessels need pumps that keep running, and in the ports fuel and oil must be moved between tanks, quays and ships.
When the pump has to handle petrol, diesel or gas oil, a few things are worth clarifying early:
- ATEX: If the pump is in a hazardous area, both pump and motor must be approved for the zone.
- Flooded suction or self-priming: A centrifugal pump needs flooded suction. If the pump has to lift the liquid from the tank, a self-priming gear pump is often the right choice.
- Lead time: Larger pumps are often built to order. Settle the specification in good time.

DESMI is one of more than 100 brands we present on our new marine site, arnenielsen.com/marine. Each brand has its own page showing what the manufacturer makes and what we can supply. The brands are grouped by product area, from burners and boilers to pumps, valves and filters.
On every brand page you can also send an RFQ without filling in a form. On the DESMI page, drop your PDF, a photo of the nameplate or a parts list and add your email. We reply within one working day.
