The Cheapest Part Can Be the Most Expensive — Especially at Sea

When a vessel is ordered, the burner on its auxiliary boiler is a rounding error next to the price of the ship. It’s tempting to wave through the lowest bid on a component that small. But as a recent article from Oilon makes clear, the cheapest choice at the tender stage is often the most expensive one across a vessel’s life. At Arne Nielsen A/S, it’s a principle we see proven every day in marine burner and boiler spares.

Why the lowest price isn’t the lowest cost

A ship’s auxiliary boiler keeps cargo and crew quarters warm whenever waste heat from the main engine isn’t enough. If that heat fails, the vessel doesn’t sail. The burner at the heart of it may represent a tiny slice of the build cost — yet it sits on the critical path to keeping the ship earning. A small saving at the tender stage can quietly turn into years of higher servicing bills, awkward maintenance, and downtime that dwarfs the original difference in price.

When a small part stops a big ship

The real exposure isn’t the equipment — it’s the parts that keep it running. Burner wear parts such as ignition electrodes, atomizing nozzles, and flame sensors are consumables: they’re meant to be replaced. The problem comes when the part you need isn’t on board and isn’t easy to source. A component worth a few euros, missing at the wrong moment, can hold a vessel worth tens of millions in port — and demurrage on a stranded ship can run to tens of thousands of euros a day.

Two things decide whether that happens: whether the equipment uses parts that are actually available, and whether you have a supplier who can put the right one in your hands quickly.

Standard parts, sourced fast

Equipment built around widely available, standard components has a decisive advantage over brand-locked designs, where proprietary spares can cost many times more and be far harder to find when a ship is halfway across an ocean. The same logic applies to how you buy spares. Rather than hunting part by part, it pays to work with a partner who carries the breadth and can match the exact item.

That’s the role we play. Across a portfolio of more than 50 marine brands — spanning burners, boilers, and fuel systems — we supply both original and compatible parts, identified against your equipment’s nameplate or maker parts list, so you get the correct fit without the cost and delay of tracking it down yourself.

Built around the boiler

Marine burner and boiler rooms are our home ground. We anchor our support around Kangrim boiler systems with OEM components and compatible spares, and back them with quality combustion and control brands — Oilon on burners, with Danfoss and Siemens on burner controls and components; Gestra and Klinger on boiler controls and water-level gauges; Suntec, Steinen and Fluidics on fuel pumps and nozzles. The point isn’t the badge on the box; it’s that the part is the right one, it’s available, and it reaches you before downtime starts to bite.

Our perspective

Chasing the lowest tender price is a false economy when a vessel’s uptime is on the line. The smarter measure is total cost over the life of the ship: reliable equipment, spare parts that are genuinely available, and a partner who can source the exact component fast. Get those three right and a worn part stays a five-minute job — not a five-figure delay.
